Patrizia Sarazen and Nathan Smith
Patrizia Sarazen, winner of the Elisabeth Bertrand Humble Servant Award, and Nathan Smith, designer of the award

Created as a tribute to Elisabeth Bertrand, who devoted her career at Transport Canada to improving the lives of seafarers, this award honours people who stand out for their spirit of compassion, dedication and service.

Ms. Sarazen’s work has made a remarkable difference to countless mariners who crossed her path. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, she has played a key role in helping Ukrainian seafarers seek asylum in Montreal. Thanks to her support, these seafarers have been reunited with their families, gained access to housing, integrated into the Quebec community and established vital ties. She also helped them with administrative formalities, such as making it faster to register with Transport Canada.

During the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, Patty negotiated with vaccination clinics to guarantee vaccines for all seafarers, making it possible for 2,000+ to receive their vaccine despite logistical challenges. She even convinced a medical team to set up a vaccination centre right in the Port of Montreal.

Another responsibility she undertakes every year is supervising the contents of 1,400 to 1,600 Christmas parcels for the seafarers, then getting them decorated by young people from schools, community groups and churches. Patty also organizes special events, including games and social evenings.

Through her dedication, empathy and caring, Patty offers seafarers priceless support, lightening their daily lives and brightening their stay away from home. The Port of Montreal is proud to count her among the pillars of Mariners’ House and salutes her exceptional impact on the marine industry community.
